The design of a forest road network is concerned with determining the combination of on-road and off-road timber transport systems likely to give minimum overall cost. The degree of investment in such a road network depends on the harvesting system chosen, the standard of road required and the costs of road construction and maintenance in each situation. The volume of timber produced by the forest has also to be considered. The report considers the factors which should be taken into account in the design and layout of forest road networks. /TRRL/
