THE DETERMINATION OF DEFORMATION AND SHEAR STRENGTH PARAMETERS FOR SANDS USING THE ELECTRICAL FRICTION-CONE PENETROMETER

Calibration tests have been performed on electrical friction-cone penetrometers in dry, fine medium sand. These tests were performed in large calibration chambers in which field conditions were simulated for both normally consolidated and overconsolidated deposits. The constrained modulus of deformation is not a unique function of cone resistance but depends also on the sand type and its initial density. The measurement of friction ratio enables a close estimate of this modulus for normally consolidated sand. It seems that the angle of friction for normally consolidated sand can be estimated fairly reliably from the cone resistance profile. Practical problems involved in determining these parameters are discussed. /Author/TRRL/
