THE DESCRIPTION OF ROCK MASSES FOR ENGINEERING PURPOSES. REPORT BY THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY ENGINEERING GROUP WORKING PARTY

In the report a system of rock mass description is proposed in which the rock mass "indices" or parameters, analogous to the soil indices, are identified and described. Where possible a system of classification tests by which indices may be determined is recommended. It is recommended that the description of a rock mass should facilitate the assembling of data in a form amenable to subsequent processing and analysis. After an introductory section and a summary of previous work, the report is set out under the following headings: requirements of a scheme of description, rock material description, rock mass description, techniques for carrying out classification tests, techniques for obtaining data, procedures for recording and presenting descriptive data on rock masses. The report does not deal with the assessment of the engineering properties and behaviour of rock masses. /TRRL/
