APPLICATION OF NUMERICAL ANALYSIS TO TWO DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION PROBLEMS

Some years ago the delft soil mechanics laboratory developed a computer program for two dimensional consolidation problems. Since that time the program has been evolved and is ready for production. Pre and post processing possibilities can be generated in a simple way. The program makes use of a numerical analysis technique called the finite element method. The method of the weighted residuals is used for finding the optimal solution. It is the intention of this article to describe how this is done. Moreover the accuracy of the results is shown by comparison with analytical solutions. The graphical output possibilities of the program such as the drawing of the element mesh, the deformation picture and the survey of the main stress directions form an important part of the program. They not only offer a check of the input but they also give an overall impression of the mechanism that is at work in the present case.
