REFLECTION CRACKING ANALYSIS FOR ASPHALTIC CONCRETE OVERLAYS (WITH DISCUSSION)

Reflection cracking has long been recognized as one of the principal forms of distress in resurfaced pavements. The current state-of-the-art for preventing reflection cracking in overlays over portland cement concrete pavements is to a large degree based on experience gained from trial and error methods of in-service highways, and has been of an empirical nature with no concentrated research effort. Before any attempt can be made to prevent reflection cracking, the causes or failure mechanisms must be defined. This paper aims to better describe these failure mechanisms so that an economical determination of material properties or treatments can be completed.
