The structures here considered are fixed steel platforms for oil production. The many factors involved in the structural design of these platforms, the choice of material, and methods of corrosion protection for the different zones (splash, atmospheric, and submerged) are briefly discussed. The applicable codes of practice and specifications are mentioned, and a detailed table is included which lists the paint products and the preparation and painting procedures recommended by a leading paint manufacturer for the various parts of the platform. Inspection and maintenance of the platform, and the relevant regulations, are also briefly discussed, together with the effectiveness of inspection. Development of more effective inspection methods is considered in the light of a recent review by the Materials Physics Division at Harwell. Some possible developments towards improved equipment for divers are mentioned; in the longer term, the submersible (and particularly the unmanned type) can be expected to play an incrasingly important role in platform inspection.
