HYDRODYNAMIC FORCES DUE TO ROLLING MOTIONS OF LARGE AMPLITUDE

After discussing the problem and the associated non-linearities, the Author describes a comparatively simple method for determining the coefficients of the hydrodynamic forces, produced by harmonic rolling-motion, for the frequency X = 0 and for any roll amplitude. The expected large non-linear influence on the damping moment caused by the reflected surface-waves is established for a number of hull cross-section profiles, Further work is needed to extend these investigations, with the object of achieving realistic prediction of rolling resonance and the accompanying forcional moments; up to the present, this has only been possible with the help of empirical data. A more detailed account of this work, which was carried out for the HSVA (Hamburg) with the support of the West German defence ministry, has been published as Report S.97/76 of the HSVA.
