SHIPPER'S AGENTS
The article discusses the emergence of shippers' agents as a major intermodal force. Their partner, the railroads began offering an intermodal service in 1955, and in 1958 shippers' agents began marketing their service and they have been involved ever since. The industry now moves in excess of 1,500,000 trailers annually, with gross sales in excess of $1 billion. The article reviews: services offered by shippers' agents; their relationship with the railroads; effect of deregulation; effect of equipment changes; and continuing intermodal role.
