This investigation was undertaken to develop an expression for the ice-breaking resistance of an oceanographic research ship operating in ice-covered waters, in terms of ship speed and ice thickness and strength. Model tests were made on a 1/24-scale model of a 54.8-m research ship at three speeds in ice of three different thicknesses and strengths. Linear regression analysis was applied to the test results to obtain an equation for the full-scale ship resistance, which is presented in graphical form for a range of operating conditions.
