The question is raised whether it is possible to construct a scientific model which, with the aid of a computer, will come up with the right solution for each container terminal. The parameters of choice including civil engineering, maintenance, dwell time and space utilisation are discussed. Equipment types are described in some detail, and finally the operational experience at six different terminals from various parts of the world is considered.
