RECYCLING - STRUCTURAL SUSTAINABILITY
The paper summarises research in recycling road materials, which has resulted in TRL Report 386: "Design guide and specification for structural maintenance of highway pavements by cold in-situ recycling". The presentation addresses three specific aspects of the research: evaluation of cold in-situ recycled roads and determination of life expectancy; trials on the A3088 in Somerset to investigate both cement bound and foamed bitumen bound cold in-situ recycled materials; and the development of structural design recommendations. Such construction is said to offer considerable environmental benefits, a reduction of disposal materials, and a reduction in energy use. The cold in-situ recycling technique is now accepted as an alternative to traditional construction for lightly trafficked roads. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114606.
