APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE OF PAVEMENT SURFACE PROPERTIES IN OTHER COUNTRIES

A questionnaire survey of PIARC member countries provided information on the extent and implementation of knowledge of skid resistance. The accident rate on wet roads is 2 or 3 times higher than on dry roads. Skidding is a major problem in countries with a wet climate. Such countries place emphasis on the initial skid resistance of new roads. Specifications for polished stone value (PSV) of aggregates and the geometry of stones are common in many states. Guidelines for levels of skid resistance are in use and many states reported routine investigations of skid resistance of the road network.
