Comments are made on the First International Skid Prevention Conference (1958) and the recommendations resulting from it, and on the progress in technology for providing skid-resistant pavement. Programs in England, Canada and the U.S., which are designed to correct locations experiencing wet pavement accidents as well as to remedy deficiencies before they lead to accidents, have the potential for providing solutions to local problems through determining the degree and type of skid resistance needed, the availability of materials, the cost-benefit relation between improvements and accident reduction, and the setting of priorities to realize the greatest benefit. There should be no undue reliance on any one criterion, such as skid test values for determining where pavement improvements should be made. Gaps in current knowledge and areas for future study are indicated. These areas include the following: pavement construction, maintenance, translation of wet pavement accident experience, and problems related to tires, friction measurements, skid inventories, and skid numbers.
