TESTS CARRIED OUT DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A LARGE METAL STAYED GIRDER BRIDGE

ESSAIS REALISES PENDANT LA CONSTRUCTION D'UN GRAND PONT METALLIQUE A HAUBANS

Details are given of the main tests carried out during the construction of the stayed girder bridge in Saint-Nazaire. Stresses under permanent loads were measured in sixteen of the stays. The jacking devices used for adjusting the stays were utilized in the measurements. The adjusting sleeve on which the strain gauges were fixed, was released stage by stage, the tensile stress being transmitted to the jacks through bars fitted with gauges and previously calibrated. The evolution in stresses during the different stages of construction was then determined by means of gauges fixed on the adjusting sleeves. Four laser transmitters were employed to measure the deflections. They were placed on the piers and directed two reference beams towards the central span and the span to the bank. The deflections were measured by means of portable sighting rods at 26 points on the structure. This device enabled rapid measurements to be made under static loads and the deflection in the middle of the central span to be determined under moving loads. /TRRL/
