THE RIO-NITEROI BRIDGE. BRAZIL'S STRUCTURE OF THE CENTURY

DIE RIO-NITEROI-BRUECKE. BRASILIENS JAHRHUNDERTBAUWERK

The Rio-Niteroi Bridge constructed on the coastal route which provides a rapid link between Rio de Janeiro and its sister city, Niteroi on the Guanabara Bay, is a 13.9 km long highway bridge. The carriageway widths are 26.6 M with A 6 M lane width and the bridge was opened to traffic on 4.3 1974. For the load bearing structure over 8 km of the bridge length, prestressed concrete continuous beams of 176 M and 292 M lengths were selected. The foundation work and the prefabrication and erection of the prestressed concrete and steel beams is fully described. The bituminous pavement consists of a tar-expoxy-adhesive surfacing with sprayed-on chippings, asphalt binder and rolled asphalt wearing course of varying thickness and composition in accordance with the recommendations of the asphalt institute. The asphalt was selected with specific reference to the climate and the very heavy traffic loading, (9000 cars, 3500 lorries, 25000 buses per day) and is basically a relatively hard bitumen, with a high proportion of coarse chippings and crushed sand. /TRRL/
