In the United Kingdom the motorway network developed in the second half of the 20th century. This book produced for the Motorway Archive Trust has eight chapters (1) the motorway programme : planning and engineering, an overview of the work of the Ministry (Department) of Transport in directing the motorway construction programme; (2) the introduction of computers; (3) route alignment and road geometry; (4) earthworks and drainage; (5) structural design of pavements; (6) the development of bridge design practice; (7) contracting to build the motorways; and (8) motorway communications and control, a review of traffic control and communication on the motorway system. The book concludes with a brief look at the future of motorways. (The Library at TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) is acting as a repository for the archive papers which support this work).
