CHECKING CHILD CAR SEATS - GUIDELINES FOR PRACTITIONERS
The restraint of babies and young children in cars is legally enforceable in the UK. Surveys have shown that many children are incorrectly restrained or not restrained at all. This guide shows how to run an in-car safety checking day. The guide describes the importance of restraints and the protection offered by restraints. The classification of child restraints (rear- and forward-facing seats, booster seats, booster cushions, carrycots and seatbelt modifiers) is outlined. Advice on planning a checking day includes guidance on target audiences, the inspection process, staff training, and publicity. The checking process is outlined with reference to the number of passengers, the restraint history, common fitting problems, technical problems, fixing kits, and checking the fit of the restraint. Questions and misconceptions relating to child restraint are discussed. Useful contacts are included.
