STRATIFICATION AND OPEN CHANNEL FLOW

The effect of density stratification on the vertical velocity profile in turbulent open channel flow is examined. Using the Monin-Obukov length scale and Prandtl mixing length theory, equations reflective of the effect of stratification are derived, and the theory is extended to estimate values of the bottom boundary friction factor. Laboratory data are used to confirm the basic hypotheses. The results indicate that density stratification can significantly modify the shape of the vertical velocity profile and the value of the friction factor. /Author/
