SPREADING OF CRUDE OIL SPILLS ACROSS A LAKE

The spreading of two different crude oils on the surface of lakes in the Mackenzie River delta region near Inuvik, N. W. T. , Canada was examined. The crude oils spread with a velocity of 3 to 16% of the wind velocity of 5.2 km/h. For one of the crude oils studied, a surface-active slick moved ahead of the bulk oil front. For both crude oil samples, compositional changes from center to edge of the bulk of the oil slick could reasonably be accounted for by evaporation only.
