RO-RO - CHANGING CONDITIONS PROMPT OVERCAPACITY FEARS
The onset of congestion in OPEC country ports has proved to be a major stimulus to the development of roll-on/roll-off shipping. But as the problems which spawned the recent ro-ro boom are being gradually overcome, the whole question of ro-ro's role in the world's deep sea trades is perhaps for the first time coming under the spotlight. With record tonnages on order, the prospect of overcapacity in this sector appears to be looming, though this could prove to be groundless.
