TRANSPORTATION AND OLDER PERSONS: PERCEPTIONS AND PREFERENCES. A REPORT ON FOCUS GROUPS

The purpose of this research is to: 1) obtain the preferences and perceptions of adults 75 years and older about their options for transportation and how they stay in touch and involved with their communities as they get older; and 2) give guidance for policy development intended to increase older peoples' mobility. Data were collected from three focus groups representing three different subsets of older people - a) urban non-drivers, b) suburban non-drivers, and c) suburban drivers. The focus groups evaluated the following issues: 1) the role and value of transportation in the individuals' daily lives; 2) how trip-making decisions are made, and the impact of health on trip-making; and 3) the transportation alternatives that are available, and how they get from one place to another when their usual transportation is not available.
