REPAIRS TO RUDDER OF VLCC ESSO NORTHUMBRIA
In view of the fractures in the stock keyway and the impracticability of renewal at this stage, the owners elected to weld a 1220 mm diam X 203 mm thick carbon steel collar to the rudder stock and rudder casting. It was concluded that the prime contributor to the weld failure between the collar and the rudder casting was the shrinks on the top of the rudder casting.
