DEEP EXCAVATIONS AND DEEP FOUNDATIONS - EFFECTS ON THE NEARBY ENVIRONMENT

In recent years, buildings have been built taller while building plots have become smaller, which causes difficulties. This article describes different effects of building construction and of settlements on the nearby environment. Three examples are given: two high rise buildings constructed with piled raft foundation and deep excavations in close vicinity to the river bank, and another building constructed over railway tunnel superstructure. The examples show today's main difficulties of geotechnical engineering in urban areas.
