PRESENT ISSUES OF VIBRATORY DRIVING IN URBAN AREAS
Vibratory driving is a technique of installation for piles and sheet piles into the ground. It consists in putting in vibration the pile in order to facilitate its penetration by strongly reducing the ground resistance. Several technological improvements have been introduced since the 1950s, in particular high frequency drivers in the 1980s and variable eccentricity drivers in the 1990s. With the last vibrators, vibratory driving gained more popularity because of reduced noise, less damage to the pile and a significant decrease of the driving time and the vibrations transmitted to the soil. Vibratory driving can thus be successfully used in urban areas. This paper reports and analyses the results of a survey into the international practice of vibratory driving. The survey deals with the applications of vibratory driving, the choice of a vibrator, and the control and acceptance of vibrodriven bearing piles. Two recent case histories are reported, where vibratory driving was successfully used in a very sensitive environment.
