PROBLEMS, SOLUTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS AT POST-TENSIONING TENDONS FROM THE GERMAN POINT OF VIEW.

Tendons with and without bond have a high level of development. Their durability, however, is considerably influenced by the quality of construction, such as grouting for sufficient corrosion protection. In Germany two trends developed. Apart from the quality assurance of the components and of the injection grout, national and international standards set high demands on the prestressing contractors. The second trend in Germany was to counteract bad construction practice by using controllable, exchangeable and strengthenable post-tensioning tendons. This resulted in a preference for external tendons. Besides the advantages, very soon the disadvantages of these tendons in design and construction were discovered. In connection with quality assurance, the mixed prestressed concrete structures are preferred, consisting of a reasonable combination of external and internal tendons. A new development is the use of controllable, exchangeable internal tendons without bonding that remedies all the notable disadvantages of external tendons yet preserves their advantages.
