WATCHING WHERE YOU SIT AND STAND

A research process is described which is based on the premise that the manner in which the public uses public space can be determined by observing its use in a systematic way. This involves a multidisciplinary approach bringing together sociological, architectural, planning, transportation engineering, geographical and filmmaking elements. Individual projects are carried out in order to produce visible, site-specific examples of how public spaces can be better designed and managed. In the approach described here, the site is selected and a team spends several days familiarizing itself with the site's problems and a structured approach to the task is then developed. Several projects are described to illustrate how the process is applied. The cumulative experience gained from 14 projects has provided valuable information about the implications of the process for designers, planners, and managers of public spaces.
