A STUDY ON ONE-SIDE AUTOMATIC ARC-WELDING IN THE HORIZONTAL POSITION FOR 50-KG/MM SQUARE HIGH-TENSILE STEEL

In tests on two automatic methods for the one-side welding of horizontal butt joints in 50-kg/sq mm steel, a model of the side shell of a ULCC was used for the investigation of cracking susceptibility. In one method, in which straight travel of the torch was used with flux-cored wire, in the (K = 44h) restrained condition cracks appeared in the heat-affected zone and the deposited metal. When the welding was followed by heat-treatment at 150 degrees C, cold cracks appeared in the (K = 75h) restrained condition but not in the (K = 44h) condition. With the other method, in which solid wire was used in conjunction with periodic arc control and weaving of the torch, there was much better resistance to cold cracking than in the first method. Cold cracking did not occur even in the (K = 75h) condition. The study is described in some detail. One general conclusion is that these cracks are mainly due to a high level of diffusible hydrogen in the welding material.
