THE NEW DIPTAC SPECIFICATIONS FOR SMALL BUSES
The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee of DiPTAC has issued new accessibility specifications for small buses (9-22 seats). The implications for the bus industry are considered. Vehicles will generally become wider and longer. They will be less manoeuvrable and cost more. There are two new DiPTAC specifications. The first (A specification) is for small buses that are not used on local services and the second (B specification) is for small buses that are used on local services. The A specification is discussed with reference to requirements for passenger entrances/exits, floor heights, handrails, seat sizes, seat belts, entrances and space allowances for wheelchairs, and powered lifts. The differences between the two specifications are outlined.
