THE IEC/UIC/IEEE TRAIN COMMUNICATION NETWORK
This paper describes how the International Electrical Commission (IEC) and the International Railways Union (UIC) standardized the Train Communication Network (TCN) as IEC 61375 for interconnecting programmable equipment between and within rail vehicles. The IEEE Rail Transit Vehicle Interface Standard Committee (RTVISC) adopted is as IEEE Std 1473 Type T. Along with companion standards of the UIC, these standards allow worldwide operation of vehicles and plug-in connection of equipment for the benefit of railways, operators, assemblers and equipment suppliers. The paper describes how numerous rolling stock manufacturers support the products development and that the European Railways Research Institute (ERRI) financed a full-scale test of the TCN on the Interlaken-Amsterdam track. In the US and Canada, an open software stack is planned.
