MINE EYES : PROXIMITY ALERT FOR MONSTER TRUCKS
This article reports on tests of GPS-based systems to provide proximity warning systems (PWS) to operators of monster trucks used in surface mines. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are developing a prototype system, along with various manufacturers. Test showed that PWS can potentially reduce accidents but longer-term and larger-scale testing is needed. Algorithms to trigger proximity warnings need to be more robust and reliable. Additional precautions and training are needed as well. Redundant technologies such as radar, camera and radio-based surveillance and warnings are also needed. The article provides a detailed description of field tests of a prototype in a working mine.
