SUBWAY NETWORK WILL REACH 150 KM

Two completely new subway lines and several extensions of existing lines are planned for the city of Osaka, Japan. Osaka is already served by seven lines and a New Tram mini-metro which together move 2.5 million passengers per day. Priority has been given to construction of a new Morishoji-Yamatogawa line. Construction began in March 2000, and the first stage is due to open in 2006. It will be constructed using a small-profile tunnel and linear motor traction technology. This type of technology enabled engineers to achieve significant cost savings on Osaka's recently-constructed Nagahori- Tsurumi-Ryokuchi line. Building the small-profile tunnel route cost 17.9 billion yen per kilometer in 1977 compared with 40.4 billion yen per kilometer on the Saikasuji line in 1992.
