TECHNOLOGY HELPS CONTROL STREET CONGESTION

The Utah Department of Transportation is already using loop detectors linked to a Traffic Operations Center to monitor traffic conditions on freeways in Salt Lake City and make that information available to the public via the Internet. An easy-to-read computer map on the Web site (www.utahcommuterlink.com) shows current traffic congestion levels as either green, amber or red. Now the Utah DOT wants to expand its system to monitor arterial surface streets in real time. The Utah Traffic Laboratory at the University of Utah, Salt Lake, has been researching how this can be accomplished using an existing network of system detectors which currently is used to detect vehicle presence, extend signal green time and the like. Details of the Utah Traffic Lab's research are described in this article.
