HOW CAN WE MEET THE CHALLENGES POSED BY REMOTE COMMUNITIES? [ROAD SAFETY IN REMOTE AREAS OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA]

The aim of this paper was to examine the road safety challenges posed by remote communities and suggest areas for improvement. Information was examined from reports which analysed data from reported road crashes (Police/Main Roads Western Australia), hospitalisations (Health Department), and program evaluation reports. Aboriginal people were found to be over-represented in serious road crashes and hospitalisations, many of which occur in the remote parts of Western Australia. A number of potential interventions for improving road safety in remote communities were identified. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E206108.
