The author presents the results of test conducted on the material properties of the wrought-iron bull-head rail, which was used at the time when the Japanese Railways started its business (in 1872) and which was discovered during field work. The rail manufacturing technology in those early days is described through comparison of the test results with the quality and grade of the rails currently in use.
