INVESTIGATIONS OF THE SERVICE BEHAVIOR OF RAILS
UNTERSUCHUNGEN ZUM GEBRAUCHSVERHALTEN VON SCHIENEN
Service problems with German rail steels are reviewed. Replacement of 549 B steel by UIC 60 is to be carried out since the former has appeared prone to service fractures, particularly at welds. Since 1969 only wear-resistant steels have been introduced and failures from rail-edge fracture, black flecks, and spalls have almost disappeared. Recent work has concentrated on fatigue behaviour, and the endurance limit of materials in use is shown to rise with the tensile strength. A detailed review of fatigue behaviour is given.
