DESTINATION SELECTION. AN AID TO SUB-REGIONAL LAND-USE/TRANSPORTATION PLANNING
The author states that the impact of alternative land-use/transportation policies on communities in the rural sub-region may be gauged through the effect on their trip distributions. This paper proposes a method which will enable the study of these distributions through the application of the gravity model at the sub-regional scale without recourse to zoning systems generally used. This is achieved through the use of an algorithm which selects a limited number of potential destinations for an individual community. The gravity model component then distributes the trips between these destinations. The paper concentrates on the shopping activity because: (1) the activity can take place at different scales in both the smallest village and the metropolitan centre, so a large number of allocation options can be tested; (2) shopping is a necessary and reasonably frequent activity for most households and is obviously constrained by the presence of shops; (3) it is an activity which can be controlled, at various scales of operation, by the local authority. A brief description of the gravity model component is given together with some of its shortcomings. There is an introduction to the 'destination selection algorithm' and a discussion of the implications of its use. /TRRL/
