INTERLOCKING STEEL SHEET PILES BY THREADER

A device that can mechanically interlock sheet piles and so eliminate the need for the high level crew man is described. The unit which weighs 25 kg is small and light enough for one man to operate, and can be used to interlock all z-sections and straight web piles, and u piles above No. 3 size. The different sections are accommodated simply by inserting appropriate rollers on to the lower spindles which form part of the lower clamp. The sequence of interlocking the last pile in a panel with the next to be pitched starts with pre-loading the threader unit by pulling the top grip against the spring pressure and so cocking it. Details of the operation are outlined. Another associated item of equipment which completes the "feet on the ground" approach to pitching sheet piling is the ground release shackle, a robut steel unit with a spring loaded plunger enabling the pile lifting shackles to be released from ground level.
