AN ENGINEER'S APPROACH TO DYNAMIC ASPECTS OF BRIDGE DESIGN

The problems facing a designer considering dynamic excitation of Bridges, either from live load or from wind, are discussed. Some approaches to the solution of such problems are suggested, and the conclusion is reached that, whilst serious instability must be avoided, it is not always necessary, desirable or indeed possible to eliminate all response. A number of specific cases of structures which showed some degree of dynamic response are discussed, and the measures necessary to limit this to acceptable magnitudes described. /Author/
