STRENGTH OF THE LPG CARRIER WITH INDEPENDENT TANKS
The uneven load-distribution on the double bottom of an LPG carrier with independent tanks should not be overlooked when calculating the ship's structural strength. The Authors (of Ishikawajima-Harima H.I.) describe a transverse-strength analysis, on the hull of a 75,000-cu m ship of this type, carried out to investigate the effect of independent tanks on the strength of the hold structure. It was found that the effect of the tank rigidity on transverse strength was fairly significant, but could be predicted with sufficient accuracy by a calculation in which the double bottom was assumed to be an isotropic rectangular plate. The article also describes a thermal stress analysis, on the same ship, in which the finite-element method was used to investigate the possibility of brittle fracture and other effects in the event of liquefied gas from the tank leaking into the hold. It was found that such leakage could cause a high local stress in the inner-bottom plating, and the possibility of such an occurrence should be taken into account in an analysis based on more detailed temperature-distribution data. The ZUNIT structural analysis program was employed in the transverse-strength analysis. In the thermal-stress analysis, the ISTRAN/S program was used. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,459.
