SHIPLIFTS--A REVIEW OF SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT IN THIS FIELD OF SHIP-REPAIRING

After a brief general discussion on ship-lifts and their application in ship repair-work and shipbuidling, some particular installations are described. The ship-lift facilities of Astilleros Canarios SA at Las Palmas, one of the largest in the world, have been in operation since May 1975. In the first ten months, a total of 345 vessels used the system, which has seven repair sites served by a single Synchrolift. At Gdynia, Poland, new ship-lift facilities will come into operation in 1978. The installation has been constructed by the two French companies Delattre-Levivier and Brissonneau & Lotz, and will have a maximum lifting capacity of 2,000 tonnes, with a basic capacity of 1,350 tonnes. The lift platform is moved up and down between two piers by ten electric winches and wire ropes; the lifting height is 9 m to shore level, where the ship is transferred to its repair site by means of cradles. The article includes further details of the system, together with a sketch of the whole installation. Schurenstedt KG's ship-lift installation, which is now in full operation at the Warftlether Sand yard on the Weser in West Germany, is described. At Masan, Korea, the capacity of Tacoma Marine Industries' ship-lift system has recently been increased to 2,000 tonnes. Its Hydranautics Lift-Lock System elevator uses hydraulic chain-jacks and stud-link chain for hoisting and lowering. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,500.
