FRP ROAD DECKS: RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS

Research on the use of fibre-reinforced plastic/polymer (FRP) for the strengthening and construction of road bridges is described. Laboratory tests on a FRP deck designed by Maunsell Ltd have been devised to investigate its performance under highway traffic loading. The deck consists of standard glass FRP cellular units and connectors and can be assembled together in a wide variety of configurations. A full description is given of the test panels. The first series of tests will consist of rolling wheel loading tests on a full-scale deck panel using the Trafficking Test Facility at TRL Limited. For these tests a wheel load of 35-45kN will be applied up to 500,000 times or until failure of the panel. Testing of fatigue specimens will be conducted with a view to the development of design guidelines. The construction of prototype structures is planned.
