A BARGE-CARRIER SYSTEM OF MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE AND VERSATILE APPLICATION. PART II: TECHNICAL CONCEPT OF THE BARGES
For the first part of this article, see MRIS Abstract No. 04 170903. In this second part, the Authors consider technical concepts for the design of the barges to suit various operational requirements, and present proposals for the general layout and equipment of the following types: three variants of a standard barge, each capable of carrying containers (including 40-ft) as well as other cargoes; a heavy-cargo barge, for such cargoes as steel products and high-value ore and other bulk cargoes; a tank barge, for liquid cargoes; and two variants of a barge for 20-ft refrigerated containers. The article includes a table summarising the principal particulars of all these types; most have a length of 27.5 m and a breadth of 11.4 m, with various deadweights up to 805 tonnes. The operational areas considered are (i) the sea; (ii) sea-ports and adjacent waters; (iii) coastal waters; and (iv) inland waterways. Part II is arranged under the following main headings, the Introduction including a summary of Part I:--1: Introduction. 2: Type Concept and Cargo Structure. 3: Operational Areas. 4: Cargo Capacities. 5: Characteristics of Design and General Arrangement. 6: Light-ship Weights. 7: Draughts and Deadweights. 8: Equipment and Outfit Characteristics. 9: Summary of Results (Principal Particulars of the Barge Types Proposed). An Appendix includes miscellaneous tabulated information on West European inland-waterways and the barge-trains used on them. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,544.
