FACTORS INFLUENCING OPERATING COST IN THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY
This study uses path and regression analysis to determine the relationship between operating conditions and operating costs in the United States domestic airline industry. The analysis uses data from eleven trunk and nine local service airlines involved in domestic operations in 1967 and 1968. Two categoreis of variables, network variables and technology variables are defined in an attempt to quantify a variety of aspects of each carriers operations, and the influence of these variables on unit cost and to some extent on size are considered.
