THE TRANSPORTATION CONNECTION

This article focuses on the design and construction of the Transportation Corridor Bridge Number 1, a structure spanning a large gap over the San Pedro Bay and connecting the 2 halves of the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) Pier 400 Project. The area's extent and the diverse uses for which it was intended required a long transportation corridor north of the Pier to provide full access to the terminals. The 7,000 ft transportation corridor, constructed of a rock dike fill, includes a 385-ft gap over the Bay designed to provide circulation between waters east and west of the Pier for the benefit of water quality and marine life. The Project's 1st phase, a 2-lane vehicular bridge, was completed in the summer of 1999. The 2nd phase, begun in December 2000 and completed in August 2001, widened the bridge by adding 2 traffic lanes and a corridor for utilities and pipelines. Phase 3, scheduled for completion by the end of 2002, will add a separate 6-track railroad crossing.
