YOUR STATE AID IS WORSE THAN MY STATE AID

In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the U.S. Congress authorized $5 billion in grants and a potential $10 billion in loan guarantees to allay bankrupticies fears in the airline industry. This action by the U.S. government shocked outsiders, as the U.S. had always held a negative stance towards other countries for "owning" airlines and protecting them from competition. Regulations by the EU, in theory, ban the governmental support of airlines which cannot find funding from the private sector. This article relates the responses of various nations, noting that some countries created their own versions of bailouts.
