PRACTICAL METHODS OF PROVIDING MOBILITY OR ACCESSIBLE SERVICES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. THE EXPERIENCE OF ZAMBIA

The author details the problems opposing the development of accessibility to public transport for the mobility-restricted population of Zambia, a poor region of sub-Saharan Africa. Buses used for public transport are said not to be standardised to aid the disabled or wheelchair users. Many developing countries have legislation in place on transport accessibility and mobility provision for the disabled, usually in response to international pressures. This policy is yet to be the situation in Zambia, where the needs of mobility-disabled persons are yet to be recognised as an affordable cost to society as a human rights issue.
