The potential of superconducting AC machines for applications in ship propulsion is reviewed. Five types of AC superconducting machines are described and evaluated: High-speed generators, low-speed synchronous motors, induction motors, thyristor switched motors, and torque compensated motors. Preliminary designs are given for each together with experimental results for some. The design methods developed for the machines will provide the basis for study of propulsion systems using AC superconducting machines.
