BUS-TRANSIT FEASIBILITY STUDY, WESTPORT, CONNECTICUT

The report examines the feasibility of bus transit in Westport, Conn. Principal characteristics of this suburban community are summarized with reference to population, housing, income and employment, land use and zoning, and projected growth trends. The authors note how a public bus system would provide major benefits to three potential user groups: youth, the elderly, and railroad commuters. It is recommended that a fleet of small buses be operated along routes designed to maximize service for these groups, and focused on the central business district and commuter railroad stations. Aspects of the recommended system are discussed, including design, service levels, route and fare structures, and estimated patronage, as well as vehicle selection and management operations.
