SHIPBUILDING COST ESTIMATION WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO TANKERS

In the present study the problem of shipbuilding cost estimation is examined, with special emphasis on tanker building. The different cost elements are analysed and the appropriate distribution of input allocation for the shipbuilding process is examined both theoretically and statistically. The relevance of the Pascal distribution is pointed out as a good approximation to the actual work distribution over time. In addition, a causal method for cost estimating is proposed, developed on rigorously established concepts. Material quantities are obtained from either parent ships or from empirical formulae modified to take into account each particular situation. Labor hours are derived through the use of a simple econometric model, allowing for changes in yard capacity utilization, yard equipment, workload DOCUMENT and labor turnover. After this, costs are obtained, by assuming a prior distribution of work, to arrive at the total cost of the ship. Finally, a simple computer model is presented, which allows an approximate cost estimation at the preliminary stage.
