JOINT WINTER RUNWAY FRICTION MEASUREMENT PROGRAMME
PROGRAMME COLLECTIF DE MESURE DE L'ADHERENCE SUR LES PISTESEN HIVER
The condition of airport runways is normally monitored as a daily routine. This information is vital for the pilot to ensure aircraft safety and prevent accidents which are related to runway contamination. This article describes comprehensive work involving a large number of interest groups within the aviation community. The work consists of harmonizing friction measurements performed by friction measuring vehicles normally used at airports. Apart from the harmonization of the friction measuring vehicles, the work also includes a comprehensive study of the relationship between the ground measuring vehicles and the actual breaking performance of aircraft. The results and expected future results of the work summarized in the article have drawn further attention to the project from both the public and private community of aviation.
